The Process of Filing an Insurance Claim

Car insurance is something that is required for all vehicles because it simply creates a safer and better environment for all motorists. However, chances are that sooner or later everyone gets into some sort of accident or incident that will require an intervention on behalf of the insurance company. It is in these situations that the driver should be fully aware of all the steps involved in this process so that his issue is resolved as fast and as efficient as possible.

No Need to Rush or Panic

If the accident was a minor one then the driver of the car should rest easy, even if he was the one at fault. As long as there are no injuries and no serious damage then the insurance company can take care of things without too much hassle. The first thing to remember is to keep a clear head. These things happen all the time. By avoiding panic the driver can stay calm and take down all the information he will need later on, which will make the claim filing go that much faster.

Once the people involved in the accident go their separate ways the driver needs to contact his insurance company. Most of them have a 24hour claims center for their clients, but these are not always the best solution. Drivers inexperienced with filing insurance claims should schedule an appointment with their insurance agent because an agent can provide them with much better 1-on-1 assistance. This should not be a problem, since most policies do not have a specific timeframe after the fact in which the claim must be filed. As long as the vehicle involved in the accident and the date is included in the policy the driver can schedule an appointment at his earliest convenience.

Gather All the Information Required

The main reason why people are advised to remain calm after a car collision is because they need to gather a lot of information. Insurance companies will want to know all of the details of a particular accident so it is best to write them down fast so as not to forget anything important. What exactly the driver needs to know will differ from company to company and from accident to accident since the circumstances surrounding a collision are rarely the same.

The best advice for the driver is to gather all the information he can since there is no such thing as too much info, but there are some things which are absolutely vital. First of all, the date, time and location of the accident need to be noted. These do not have to be incredibly accurate: the street and the hour when it happened will usually suffice. After that the driver needs to collect some info on the cars and people involved. The model, make and year of the cars are always required. Obviously, the names of the drivers are also needed, but the passengers should also leave their names, too. If a police officer intervened and filed a report the driver should also make a note of that report number, as well. Lastly, before everyone leaves the driver needs to make sure that everyone involved left some contact details, whether it is a phone number or an email. With this info the claim process should go smoothly without any further inquiries from the insurance company.
